In Basque, the most important word in a sentence goes right before the verb. Whatever that word happens to be.

That slot is the galdegaia, the focus: the new information, the bit that answers a question (asked or implied). The word itself is galde (question) + gai (topic). Its opposite is the mintzagaia, what everybody already knows.

So word order changes with what you want to highlight:

  • Aitak ekarri ditu sagarrak answers “who brought the apples?”: the father.
  • Sagarrak ekarri ditu aitak answers “what did the father bring?”: the apples.
  • Zer edango duzu? (what will you drink?) gets Ardo beltza edango dut, literally “red wine I’ll drink”.

The focus and the verb are said together, in one breath, no pause. Even the verb can be the focus: then you prop it up with egin (Gaur joan egin naiz, “today I did GO”).

It’s like a sentence that rearranges itself around the question you asked. I love it.
