Imagine that food stops arriving in your city; they cut the power, the water.
The prices of every basic thing for life climb until they become prohibitive, because many before you have already invested everything in trying to stay alive. Today, that 44-inch TV is worth less than a piece of bread.
People die of hunger; the grandparents and the babies go first. You feel guilty about everything you could have done when the situation wasn’t yet so extreme, when you could still have stored something and didn’t. Before, you thought you were doing badly; if only you had known. Help is a few km away, but they won’t let you reach it.
Now multiply this drama by a million.
Some cities are besieged by the regime, others by ISIS, others by the rebels. Danger has many faces.
Not everything is allowed, not even in war. This should never happen. Sieges of civilians, sarin gas attacks… Where is the limit?
I usually say the past was rubbish, but sometimes I look at the present and it seems we’ve learned nothing.
