Bushusuru (ブッシュする, Japanese): “to do a Bush”. To vomit in public, somewhere very visible. The president’s surname plus suru, the verb “to do”.
Tokyo, 8 January 1992, state dinner at the Prime Minister’s residence. Between the second and third course, in front of the cameras, George H. W. Bush vomited into Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa’s lap and fainted. Acute gastroenteritis, said the doctors. Barbara Bush held a napkin to his mouth until the Secret Service arrived, then gave his speech for him. Bush, still on the floor, joked that they could roll him under the table until dinner was over.
A head of state, immortalised as a verb.
Honesty note: I’ve only found the word in English-language sources, which say it lived on in Japan for a few years. How much people there really used it, I can’t tell you. If you know, tell me.
Much lighter than its neighbours Karoshi and Ganbaru. Part of my collection of hard-to-translate words.
