Original in Spanish: Emma Sharp

Emma Sharp was a supertía who in 1864 walked 1000 miles in 1000 hours.

“That doesn’t sound so impressive”, you’ll say.

In 1000 CONSECUTIVE hours, over 42 days, meaning: every single hour had to contain its walked mile. If she did 2 miles in one hour, the second one didn’t count. Just being awake every hour for that long is torture.

Well, the thing is that, whether because there were bets involved, or because people couldn’t stomach that someone without a penis would be the first person to pull off a jackass stunt of extreme exhaustion, during those 42 days things like these happened:

  • They drugged her food.
  • They threw things on the ground to hurt her feet.

Things kept escalating:

  • 18 plainclothes policemen were placed in the crowd to protect her.
  • At night, a volunteer walked ahead of her with a loaded rifle.

The last two days:

  • She walked carrying a pistol, which she reported having fired a total of 27 times.

So, not quite the Wild West, but close enough.

The thing is that when she finished, her husband was dying of embarrassment, because people called him a pushover and all that, but he must have gotten over it when he got his share of the gate money from the 25k people who came to watch her arrive.
