Isaac Asimov was born in Petrovichi, Soviet Russia, around 1920 (the exact date is fuzzy), grew up in Brooklyn and died in New York in 1992. Biochemist, Boston University professor, and a machine for producing both science fiction and popular science.

With Heinlein and Clarke he’s one of the “big three” of golden-age sci-fi. His robot stories (Yo, robot, starring the robopsychologist Susan Calvin) gave us the Three Laws of Robotics and the very word “robotics”; the Foundation series did the same for galactic empires.
