The messiah of a cargo cult on the island of Tanna, Vanuatu, usually pictured as an American WWII serviceman who will one day return bringing wealth. When Attenborough asked locals in 1960 what Frum looked like: “‘E look like you. ‘E got white face. ‘E tall man.”
The movement took off in the 1940s, when 50,000 American troops landed with unimaginable amounts of cargo. Followers threw away their money, left the missionary churches and went back to kastom, waiting for John to return. In the 1990s there were still 5,000 believers; today, fewer than 500 in a single village keep the faith.
