Singer-songwriter, born in Girona in 1948 and raised in Verges, the Empordà village he never quite left. A voice of the Nova Cançó, the Catalan-language song movement under Franco.
In 1968 he wrote L’estaca, a stake everyone pulls at together until it falls, and it became an anthem far beyond Catalonia. The censors kept banning him, and from 1970 to 1975 he lived in exile in Paris, where he filled the Olympia. Then came Viatge a Ítaca (1975), a record at Camp Nou in 1985 (more than 100,000 people) and his farewell to the stage in 2007, in Verges.
Second life: novelist (Memòria d’uns ulls pintats, 2012), member of the Catalan Parliament for Junts pel Sí (2015-2017), and president of the Assemblea Nacional Catalana from 2024 until April 2026, when he stepped down for health reasons and stayed on as vice-president.
