Mining engineering student, Atlético de Madrid footballer, socialist, actor, soldier. And the last great love of Federico García Lorca.
He joined Lorca’s travelling university theatre, La Barraca, in 1933. Lorca called him “the man with the three Rs” (his initials) and they fell in love on the 1935 summer tour. Much of the Sonetos del amor oscuro is about him.
When Lorca was murdered in August 1936, Rapún enlisted to fight for the Republic. He was wounded near Bárcena de Pie de Concha and died in Santander on 18 August 1937: one year, almost to the day, after Lorca.
His story is one of the three threads of La bola negra.
What a story.
