Colombian woman from Vaupés who, in labor deep in the Amazon with no help coming, performed a caesarean on herself with a kitchen knife, and both she and the baby survived (“three times I cut myself, and the baby came out”). Years later, in 2018, the husband who had refused to help her that day murdered her with a shotgun in front of two of her five children, then killed himself. She had reported him for abuse years before; police took five days to reach the settlement. A story about an extraordinary woman, and about how far away help can be, in the jungle and everywhere else.
