Four near-future novellas by Cory Doctorow (2019), each one a present-day political problem pushed one notch further. A refugee jailbreaks her DRM-locked toaster (it only accepts “authorized bread”) and risks deportation for copyright infringement. A Superman-like hero tries to report a racist police beating and learns what happens when the system does not want witnesses. Men whose health insurers deny their families’ treatments radicalize each other in a forum, all the way to violence. And a millionaire prepper waits out the collapse in his bunker, where the collapse refuses to follow his script.

The toaster one sounds like satire until you remember your printer already rejects unauthorized ink.
