A. S. Byatt’s 1994 novella, the source of Three Thousand Years of Longing.
A narratologist buys a glass bottle in Istanbul and releases a djinn who owes her three wishes. She knows the folklore, so she knows how three wishes always end, and the story becomes an argument between a scholar of stories and a creature made of them.
The title is the bottle: çeşm-i bülbül, nightingale’s eye, a real Turkish glassmaking style.
