From September 1941 to January 1944 Leningrad was besieged: hunger, bombs, a first winter that killed hundreds of thousands. Most of the people who stayed and held the city were women.

This book gives them the word. Cynthia Simmons and Nina Perlina searched archives for diaries and letters, interviewed survivors, and put together thirty testimonies by women of every age, job and ideology, among them Sofia Nikoláievna Buriakova’s diary. Perlina lived through the siege herself, as a small child.

University of Pittsburgh Press, 2005. In Spanish it’s Escritos de mujeres desde el sitio de Leningrado (La Uña Rota, 2014).
