Original in Catalan: Les corrandes

The corranda is the Catalan way of making up verses on the spot and singing them. A tune everyone knows, seven-syllable lines, rhyme, and your turn to answer.

If the Balearic Islands have the glosa, Catalonia proper has corrandes: the ones from Beget, from Folgueroles, the “Carolino”, and they’re also sung in Roussillon. You already know the music; what you have to invent, on the spot, is the lyrics. Often four lines, and on to the next one.

And a famous case of corrandes that aren’t improvised: the “Corrandes d’exili” by Pere Quart (Joan Oliver), published in 1947 in Saló de tardor while he was in exile in Chile, and turned into a song by Lluís Llach. The popular form used to tell the pain of exile.

It’s Impro, with music.
