The witch of Greek myth. Daughter of the sun god Helios, living on the island of Aiaia.
In book 10 of The Odyssey she turns Odysseus’ men into pigs. He resists her magic thanks to an herb, moly, that Hermes gives him, and then stays with her for a whole year before she sends him to consult the dead in Hades.
Three thousand years later she got her own book: in Circe (novel), by Madeline Miller, she’s the narrator, and the heroes are the visitors. And she’s on screen in Nolan’s The Odyssey (film) (2026), played by Samantha Morton.
