Christopher Nolan took on Homer. And won: it’s the year’s film.

The Odyssey (2026) adapts the epic: Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his ten years trying to get home after the Trojan War. Released 17 July 2026, almost three hours long (173 minutes), and the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX film cameras, on location in six countries; a replica Viking longship played the Greek warship.

The cast, for the record: Matt Damon (Odysseus), Tom Holland (Telemachus), Anne Hathaway (Penelope), Benny Safdie (Agamemnon), Jon Bernthal (Menelaus), Lupita Nyong’o (Helen of Troy, and Clytemnestra), Samantha Morton (Circe), Charlize Theron (Calypso), Zendaya (Athena) and Robert Pattinson (Antinous, the boldest of Penelope’s suitors).

About 1.75 billion dollars worldwide, Nolan’s biggest hit, and the first original Hollywood film since Avatar to pass a billion at the international box office. Some critics complained about what it changes from Homer. As if Homer had been one person who didn’t change things.
