The most famous monsters of Doctor Who, since 1963. Everyone remembers them as Martians; they aren’t. They come from the planet Skaro, and inside each metal casing (a pepper pot with a sink plunger and a gun) lives a mutant, what’s left of the Kaled people after their scientist, Davros, rebuilt them for war, without pity.
Created by the writer Terry Nation and designed by Raymond Cusick, they caused a real “Dalekmania” in 1960s Britain and probably saved the series in its first year. They hate everything that isn’t a Dalek, and they say so, loudly. Archenemies of The Doctor.
