It first aired on 23 November 1963, the day after Kennedy was shot. It’s still around: Guinness calls it the longest-running science-fiction series in the world.

A BBC series created by Sydney Newman, with C. E. Webber and Donald Wilson. The Doctor, an alien from the planet Gallifrey, travels through time and space in a machine that looks like a 1960s police box and is bigger on the inside, almost always with a human companion. The best known of the modern era: Rose Tyler. The great love story: River Song, told backwards (A love story told backwards). The monsters everyone remembers: the Daleks and the Weeping Angels.

Original run 1963-1989, a TV film in 1996, revival in 2005, and a co-production with Disney+ from 2023 to 2025. Since May 2025 it’s on hiatus, with the BBC looking for a new producer and a return expected no earlier than 2028.
