The Canadian behind Doctor Who. As head of drama at the BBC (1962-1967) he wanted a science-fiction show for families on Saturday evenings, and came up with the two key ideas: a time machine bigger on the inside, and a mysterious traveller known only as “the Doctor”. Others (Donald Wilson, C. E. Webber) did much of the development.
A science-fiction fan, he saw the genre as a safe way to say nasty things about our own society.
